We get asked this constantly: "should I hire a maid or a helper?" The two words get used interchangeably in everyday conversation, but they are genuinely different roles with different responsibilities and different price points.
Maids: A Full, Independent Role
A maid is female household staff who independently manages cleaning, laundry, ironing and daily upkeep. This is not an assistant role, it is a full role. A maid should be able to run the cleaning and laundry side of your household on her own, without needing someone else to direct her through every task.
Typical maid responsibilities:
- Full room cleaning, dusting and mopping
- Laundry, ironing and wardrobe organisation
- Dishwashing and kitchen support
- Daily household organisation, independently managed
Maid salaries in Islamabad typically start at PKR 40,000 per month.
Helpers: Support, Not a Substitute
A helper assists your existing cook or maid with daily chores. This is explicitly a support role, not a replacement for either. If you hire a helper expecting them to independently run your household cleaning the way a maid would, you will be disappointed, that is not what the role is designed for.
Typical helper responsibilities:
- Supporting the main cook or maid with daily chores
- Dishwashing and general tidying
- Guest room preparation
- Errands and basic upkeep
Helper salaries in Islamabad typically start at PKR 25,000 per month, reflecting the more limited scope of the role.
Which One Should You Hire?
Ask yourself: do I need someone who can independently manage household cleaning and laundry from start to finish? If yes, hire a maid. Do I already have a cook or maid and just need extra hands to lighten the load? If yes, a helper is the more cost-effective choice.
Some larger households hire both, a maid to run the core cleaning and laundry, and a helper to support her (or the cook) with the overflow. This is common in bigger homes or households with young children.
A Word of Caution
Because "maid" and "helper" get used loosely in everyday conversation, it is worth being explicit when you describe what you need, both to yourself and to whoever you're hiring through. A mismatch in expectations here is one of the most common reasons a placement doesn't work out in the first month.
Every maid and helper we place goes through CNIC verification, a police character certificate check, and direct reference calls to previous employers. Request a maid or request a helper and we will match you with a verified candidate within 24 to 48 hours.
