One of the first decisions you'll make when hiring domestic staff, whether it's a maid, cook, nanny or driver, is whether the arrangement should be live-in or live-out. Both are common in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and the right choice depends on your household, not a general rule.
Live-In Staff
Live-in arrangements mean the staff member resides at your property, typically with a room provided as part of the arrangement.
Advantages:
- Available for early mornings, late evenings or emergencies without a commute
- Often a slightly lower cash salary, since board and lodging are included
- Practical for households needing round-the-clock coverage, such as newborn care or elderly care
Tradeoffs:
- Requires suitable accommodation on your property
- Less separation between work hours and personal time for both sides
- Needs clearer upfront agreement on days off and personal time, since the staff member is always on-site
Live-Out Staff
Live-out arrangements mean the staff member commutes from their own home for set working hours.
Advantages:
- Clear separation between work hours and personal time
- No accommodation required from you
- Often easier to change arrangements (hours, days) without disrupting living arrangements
Tradeoffs:
- Not available outside agreed hours without prior arrangement
- Commute time can affect punctuality, especially in bad weather or traffic
- Typically a higher cash salary since no board or lodging is provided
Which Roles Suit Which Arrangement?
- Nannies and newborn care: live-in is common and often preferred, given the need for availability during night hours.
- Cooks and maids: both arrangements are common; live-out is often preferred for households wanting clear boundaries around personal space.
- Drivers: live-out is more typical, since the role is defined by set hours (school runs, office hours) rather than continuous presence.
- Nurses and caretakers: live-in is common for ongoing care needs, particularly post-surgery recovery or elderly support requiring overnight presence.
Our Recommendation
If your need is genuinely round-the-clock (a newborn, post-surgery recovery, an elderly family member who needs overnight support), live-in is usually the more practical and often more cost-effective choice. If your need is defined by set daily hours and you value clear boundaries, live-out is usually the better fit.
Whichever you choose, agree the specifics in writing before the placement starts: working hours, days off, and (for live-in arrangements) what accommodation and meals are included.
We place both live-in and live-out staff across every category, cooks, maids, helpers, nannies, drivers, nurses and more. Browse all staff categories or request staff directly and we'll match you with a verified candidate suited to the arrangement you need.
